MUP 150 - History of Popular Music 3 Semester Hours Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor. An introduction to the history of popular music in America from the mid- 19th century to the present. Students will be introduced to terminology, genres and styles, business and broadcasting practices, music production techniques, and technological developments in American popular music. Through listening examples and discussion, students will become familiar with a variety of musical genres including minstrel, Tin Pan Alley, ragtime, jazz, swing, blues, folk, country, rhythm & blues, 50s rock & roll, 60s rock, soul, funk, disco, punk, new wave, alternative, and electronic.
