COM 215 - Interpersonal Communication and Culture

3 Semester Hours
This class introduces you to the study of interpersonal communication and culture. We will work to understand the communicative processes and practices that occur between people. That is, whenever we communicate, we mean so much more than the literal words we say. The competency we have is due to our socialization in our culture. Meaning, how we communicate and what we mean with our words is culturally patterned. This means that people from different backgrounds can have different understandings, often resulting in miscommunication between one another. As we communicate our communication links us to our society and helps us build our identity. However, if not done carefully and with an ear towards being understanding of the communicative differences that exist across all peoples this can lead to social problems like discrimination and marginalization.
