EDU 210 - Introduction to Foundations of Reading

Prerequisite: EDU 202 , EDU 205  , EDU 208  
This course is the first of three in building strong competencies and skills for pre-service teachers to teach reading to K-6 students based upon the Science of Reading research. The Introduction to Foundations of Reading course provides a scientifically-based foundation in the cognitive, socio-cultural, linguistic, and motivational influences on literacy and language development. Pre-service teachers will become familiar with how reading develops, spanning from children’s earliest alphabetic skills through to the tluent word recognition and skilled text comprehension characteristic of expert readers. The relationship between decoding skills and language skills through the Simple View of Reading, will be explored, as well as the types of reading disability that may interfere with learning to read.
