JUS 331 - Mental Health Law and Criminal Justice

Prerequisite: JUS 293  
This course will examine the current statutory law and applicable court decisions in the area of mental health and then appraise how criminal justice professionals should handle those individuals undergoing a mental health episode. Improve understanding among the students so that they can more effectively comprehend the appropriate conduct that law enforcement and other criminal justice professionals should know when interacting with the public. Apply discernment to a set of provided examples that challenge the student’s comprehension of the law that governs police-citizen encounters with members of the public suffering from a mental illness by employing the concepts learned in the course.
