EDU 312 - Teaching K-2 Literacy 3 Semester Hours Prerequisite: EDU 202 , EDU 205 , EDU 208 , EDU 210 As guided by the Science of Reading research and Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LET RS), this course focuses on content, best practices, and training pre-service teachers to teach K-2 literacy foundational skills, of phonological awareness, phonics, concepts of print, alphabetic principle, orthographic, and structural word analysis. Pre-service teachers will learn in this course, how to assess and use assessment data to guide instruction to meet the needs of all students. Practical experiential learning will be demonstrated through a variety of modalities, including field placement schools, mock activities in the classroom, and developing and creating authentic artifacts. The content for this course is aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, the Knowledge and Practice Standardsfor Teachers of Reading (updated 2018), International Dyslexia Association.
Note: A student must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program before enrolling in upper-level education courses or must have permission from the Teacher Education Program. Permission will not be granted to students who have less than a 3.0 GPA.
