EDU 313 - Teaching 3-6 Literacy 3 Semester Hours Prerequisite: EDU 202 , EDU 205 , EDU 208 , EDU 210 , EDU 312 The third course in the Teacher Education series, is EDU 313, Teaching 3-6 Literacy. This course focuses on the last three Science of Reading components, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, assessment, and the sub-skills under each component. Reading fluency has traditionally been recognized as a competency associated with vocabulary (word recognition) and comprehension. As readers become more automatic (fluent) in word identification they are able to devote less attention and cognitive resources to word decoding and more to text comprehension. Reading itself has been associated with growth in vocabulary. Thus, as readers become more fluent, they are able to cover more text resulting in greater gains in readingvocabulary and comprehension.
Pre-service teachers will learn in this course, how to teach fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and how to assess and use assessment data to guide instruction to meet the needs of all students. Practical experiential learning will be demonstrated through a variety of modalities, including field placement schools, mock activities in the classroom, and developing and creating authentic artifacts. The content for this course is aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, the Knowledge and Practice Standardsf or Teachers of Reading ( updated 2018), International Dyslexia Association.
Note: A student must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program before enrolling in upper-level education courses or must have permission from the Teacher Education Program. Permission will not be granted to students who have less than a 3.0 GPA.
